Hello,

I am delighted to join this group as a science graduate of over 30yrs and as a semi retired business person from the tech sector (Perkin Elmer and Microsoft). I am also a co-opted volunteer councillor for Great marlow Parish council and a founding trustee of WildMarlow. I am also a Chair of governors for a local primary school in HW so am very interested in local community.

I am very interested in this Lidar work and have a strong interest in how the geology and archaeology of the chilterns links to the wild life.

I  have recent down a full audit of the BMERC wildlife record with a professional ecologist and have plans for community and specialist interest groups to learn and record more wildlife in the chiltern on our patch GMPC.

I have participated in a number of international development activities around the SDG's and even helped a project like this one spotting details on the ground in remote parts of africa using TomNod which i think expired in 2019.

Happy to chat with anyone about this and help with this Lidar project.

Thanks

Nick

Living in and loving the CHILTERNS as a AONB and place for people and wildlife i was really interested to read about this project and here it mentioned on BBC Countryfile recently.

Hello everyone,

I am Clare Spicer. I have always had a love of archaeology and landscape history, as an amateur. I am really interested in the LiDar images, having seen them before on various archaeology programmes on TV, and am keen to get involved.

Hello All!

I'm Nick Gammage, living in Chesham Bois. Born and raised in Northampton (near a cattle market) and living in the Amersham area for the past 30 years, I have for a long time been fascinated by the routes drovers - especially Welsh drovers - took through Bucks and the Chilterns as they drove their herds to the markets and fairs of the Midlands and London. I'm particularly keen to discover more about the holloways, green streets, ponds and Drovers Inns they used. This mapping is already proving invaluable.

Later this year I will be walking 250 miles from Treginnis Farm near St Davids in Pembs  (the most westerly farm in Wales) back to my home (in Hollow Way Lane!) following as closely as I can routes the drovers took with their Welsh Blacks!

Hi I've lived in the Chilterns most of my life, orignally in Rotherfield Peppard not far from Henley and now in Hastoe on the escarpment above Tring. I was excited to hear about this project and only wish I had stumbled onto it sooner. I did Geomorpholgy at Uni and have a fascination for Geology and archeology. Its certainly provided a new focus for my walks in the area and the interpretation of the Lidar images has changed my perspective of the landscape. Just sorry I'm so late to the party!

Hi Sally

Welcome, and there is still plenty to find. I live in Berkhamsted and often walk around Hastoe - there are some particularly intriguing remains by Grim's Ditch in Shrubbs wood, Kiln Road, very close to you. It will be interesting to see any conclusions that you can draw about the geology of the area - on the reviewers portal we can display the monuments against the geology and interesting patterns seem to emerge.

Hi everyone,

I'm Jonathan; I live in Lewes, where I'm a member of the Sussex Archaeological Society. I have no professional archaeological training, but like others here I am a keen walker and porer over of maps, so this is like heaven for me! I have been adding records for over a month now and would love to know if I'm pointing in the right direction. I've been concentrating on the southern section of the watershed, and I'm interested in roads and trackways - particularly keen to trace the most likely route from Goring up onto the watershed.

Good afternoon everyone. I've met some of you Ed's final 'Mapathon', but I'm Giles, the 'new Ed' (big shoes to fill).

For the next year I will be Landscape Heritage Officer for the Beacons of the Past Project, and I'm really excited to be on board. I'm based remotely in Shropshire, and am available part time - mainly available on Friday. I will be supporting all of you continuing the great work you have been engaged with identifying and mapping many hundreds of archaeological features. I can be contacted on the forums, or via email - gcarey@chilternsaonb.org

My background is in Historic Environment Records (HERs) - information resources on the archaeology and historic buildings of an area, held, in the main by local authorities. They are key tools for managing, conserving and researching the historic environment of an area. A key part of my role, going forward, will be to ensure that the information gathered can be effectively passed on to HERs across the AONB area, so that these sites can be effectively managed and conserved - this will be an important legacy of the project.

I'm interested in the archaeology of all periods, by the way, but particularly prehistory. I've spent a lot of time in muddy trenches in the North of Scotland, but do love the diversity of features that LiDAR brings you into contact with!

Keep an eye out for volunteer events going forward - I'm keen to continue the success of the Mapathons, in particular.

Best wishes

Giles

Hi Giles,

good to hear from you. Can you tell me is there an easy way to identify natural features like ponds and any experience of finding old filled in ponds. I’m interested in biodiversity and species and habitats and looking for local ponds could really help us.

Aside of that I’m keen to get going with you.

Best Rgds

Nick

Hi Nick

We discussed this use of old ponds earlier in the project; one way to find them is to use the historic OS layer to identify those in existence in the late 19th century. This will not get all of the ponds but the larger ones should be shown.  You could also look at the  national library of Scotland historic maps  https://maps.nls.uk/os/  for other periods

You can search the forum for all references to pond, as well , this might give some ideas too. The forum search is on the black bar :-

Hi, my name is Lindsay.

I am currently a third-year university student at the University of Illinois, and originally from North Carolina.

I am a geology major and minoring in Archaeology.

I am taking a GIS course this semester and we were learning about LiDAR in class when I recalled the many archaeological sites that have been found using LiDAR and decided to find somewhere I could help analyze it.

I grew up very interested in maps and history so using historical maps and topographic and LiDAR data is something that fascinates me, and I always found the idea of using this data and comparing it to find historical sites really cool, so I hope to be of some assistance here

Hi Lindsay and welcome! Things a little quiet around here as the main activity of the Citizen Science project has tailed off somewhat whilst all the results are properly looked at, but hopefully you can still enjoy looking at the Tutorials, having some fun with the data (please do keep recording things), and please do continue to post on the forum, as there are a few of us around still enjoying exploring and discussing the data!

Hi guys. I’m Michael from Maryland, US. I am currently enrolled in the Deep Time project with Dig Ventures and National Trust. If you’re not familiar with it it’s another Lidar based Citizen Science project. I’m in the first phase of training and plan to explore this mostly when that project is completed. Good luck to everyone and I look forward to helping in any small way.

Hi Michael. I look forward to meeting up with you on the Dig Ventures project where I've also been recruited as a volunteer!

It's gone pretty quite on the Beacons project now as the funding period has come to an end. However, the data is still up and accessible, and I would certainly recommend exploring Ed's tutorials to give you a head start on Deep Time.

If you are interested in following further developments in the Chilterns, then Beacons has now been superceded / morphed-into the Chilterns Heritage & Archaeology Project - follow here https://www.chilternsaonb.org/flagship-projects/chap/
